Garage Door Off Track

How to Fix a Garage Door When It Become Detached

If your garage door ever comes off its track, stop operating it immediately. If it continues to operate, the door can sustain serious damage. It will be necessary for a garage door technician to put it back on track. He might have to straighten or even replace some of the door panels. If the detached garage door simply comes off its track and you catch it before any damage occurs, you can pop the garage door rollers back onto the track and reattach the door yourself.

  1. Separate the garage door opener from the door. Look for a rope and handle dangling from the center of the door opener track. Reach up and pull the handle to disengage the opener.

  2. Raise the door partially by lifting it until one set of rollers aligns with the problem area on the garage door track. Secure the door in that location by clamping a pair of locking pliers on the track just below the bottom of the door.

  3. Open the garage door track near where the rollers jumped it with a pair of pliers. The track may already be wide enough to guide the wheels of the rollers back onto the track. Close the opening in the track by placing a small block of wood against the outside edge and using the block as a buffer as you hammer the track straight again with a wooden mallet.4

  4. Remove the locking pliers. Lower the door to the ground. Push the door opener’s remote control to close the door. As the opener goes through its maneuvers, it should catch the door, and the release mechanism should snap back into position so the remote works once again.

  5. Open and close the door several times to ensure the door is working properly. Watch the rollers on both sides to see if there are any other problem areas. If you see spots where the rollers are dragging or catching, straighten the track.
